£10.99During a recent presentation at the International Music Summit (IMS) in Ibiza, CEO Alex Tripi discussed the results of a survey conducted by the Pete Tong DJ Academy. The survey targeted 15,000 DJs and producers who are enrolled in the academy, shedding light on concerns regarding the accessibility of the electronic music industry for newcomers and the growing influence of social media in the dance music scene.
Among the key findings, 62% of emerging DJs and producers expressed the sentiment that the electronic music industry is a closed circle, while 61% emphasized that social media metrics hold more significance than musical talent in today’s landscape. A 24-year-old DJ-producer from France shared their experience, stating that each social media post feels like a test, leading to feelings of failure if the response is not as expected.
Despite the challenges highlighted in the survey, 35% of respondents remained optimistic about their prospects in the industry, believing that persistence and resilience are key to success. Mental health was also a significant concern, with 52% of participants reporting experiencing anxiety or burnout, and 31% admitting to contemplating leaving the music industry entirely within the past year.
The IMS summit, themed ‘Intergenerational Exchange,’ covers various topics such as the impact of tinnitus on music professionals, the evolution of jungle and drum ‘n’ bass over 40 years, and efforts to combat elitism within dance music.
