Man who claimed to “only be bringing sombreros” from Mexico to UK caught with £5.6 million in cocaine

A 35-year-old man named Kristopher Purvis has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after Border Force officers discovered £5.6 million worth of cocaine in a bag he claimed only contained sombreros. The National Crime Agency (NCA) reported that Purvis and a companion arrived at Edinburgh Airport from Mexico via a stopover in Paris, passing through the nothing-to-declare channel with a black briefcase and a plastic bag filled with novelty sombreros.

Upon searching Purvis, officers uncovered 4.8 kilos of package-wrapped cocaine with a purity of approximately 52%. The NCA’s Donnie Lawrie stated, “Kristopher Purvis attempted to appear like an innocuous tourist and claimed to only be carrying sombrero souvenirs. The truth was, the luggage he was carrying contained millions of pounds worth of drugs.” Purvis was used as a courier by criminals looking to boost their profits from selling drugs on UK streets.

Detective Chief Inspector Laura Sands of Police Scotland emphasized the importance of disrupting the supply and distribution of controlled drugs in Scotland. She highlighted the significance of community information in investigations to combat the drug trade and hold those responsible accountable. This intervention prevented a significant quantity of class A controlled drugs from entering the country, showcasing the commitment of law enforcement agencies to address drug-related crimes effectively
