Drake’s legal counsel has released a recent statement following the rapper’s revision of his complaint against Universal Music Group (UMG). Last Wednesday, Drake amended his 107-page complaint against the music behemoth, accusing the label of endorsing, releasing, and launching a campaign to make Kendrick Lamar’s diss track ‘Not Like Us’ aimed at Drake go viral. The updated complaint, filed in New York, now includes additional defamation claims, alleging that UMG also tried to propagate the false claim that Drake is a criminal pedophile.
In the latest iteration of the complaint, it is asserted that the NFL’s decision to censor the phrase “certified pedophile” during Kendrick’s Super Bowl Halftime show in February implied that the track is defamatory. Drake’s team maintains that the performance was a deliberate attempt to tarnish Drake’s reputation. UMG responded to the revised complaint by denouncing it as “frivolous and reckless.”
Subsequently, in an ensuing response to the label’s statement, shared with Mixmag, Drake’s team countered, stating that UMG’s latest statement is a desperate endeavor to manipulate the narrative and divert attention from the truth: Drake is holding the world’s largest music conglomerate accountable for its actions and doing so courageously. Despite the ongoing legal dispute, discovery proceedings are set to proceed, with Drake’s team expressing readiness and emphasizing that there are no hidden secrets on their end. They assert that it is the current leadership of UMG that should be concerned about what will be revealed, as Drake is seeking nothing but truth and accountability
