Newcastle A1 police crash: Man charged with dangerous driving

Following a police pursuit on the A1 that resulted in a crash, seven officers were injured, and a man has been charged in connection with the incident. The crash involving five police vehicles and a BMW occurred near Denton Burn in Newcastle around 02:30 BST on April 9, according to Northumbria Police. Charged with dangerous driving, 20-year-old Mazyar Azarbonyad, who resides at Sylvia Terrace in Durham, is set to appear at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on Saturday. In addition to the dangerous driving charge, Azarbonyad is facing two counts each of failing to stop a motor vehicle when required by a constable, no insurance use, and driving otherwise than in accordance with a license.

Meanwhile, a woman in her 20s who was initially held on suspicion of aiding and abetting dangerous driving has been released without further action on that specific charge. However, she has been granted police bail in relation to drug possession offenses pending further investigations. The aftermath of the crash led to the closure of the A1 in both directions over the River Tyne, spanning from Swalwell in Gateshead to Denton, for nearly 13 hours. Traffic disruption was extensive due to the closure, causing inconvenience to commuters using that route.

The charges issued against Azarbonyad shed light on the legal repercussions of the crash, which resulted in injuries to the officers involved. Investigations into the circumstances that led to the crash are ongoing, with authorities working to establish a clearer picture of the events that unfolded during the police pursuit. The closure of the A1 for many hours underscored the severity of the crash and the significant impact it had on traffic flow in the surrounding areas, prompting further scrutiny of road safety measures and adherence to driving regulations
