Acne, one of the most common skin conditions, can cause permanent scarring
One skin cancer patient, who had treatment from Dr Nelson, paid £500 to see him twice privately because she could not wait the eight months it would have taken on the NHS.
“I felt I had no choice,” the patient says.
She added that spending all her savings was worth it because “if Dr Nelson had waited, she could have been dead”.
Miss Jones agrees, with skin disease patients turning to private clinics or charities for fast-track help.
Growing demand for private services has seen the percentage of funding from NHS work at private hospitals double, NHS data shows.
But as skin disease patients struggle to secure essential NHS care, the potential for serious complications and isolation remains.
And the scars, visible, permanent and enduring on the skin, tell more than one story.
