'Good chance' of US trade deal with UK, says Vice-President Vance

JD Vance, the US Vice-President, expressed optimism about the possibility of a trade deal between the UK and the United States amidst ongoing global trade disruptions. Vance mentioned in an interview with the UnHerd website that there was a “good chance” for such an agreement in collaboration with Keir Starmer’s government. The upheaval in the global stock market began on 2 April following President Donald Trump’s announcement of imposing extensive tariffs on nearly all countries, including a 10% “baseline” tariff on imports from the UK, France, and other traditional trading partners.

Recent discussions between the UK and the US on a potential trade deal have reportedly been productive, with indications that the agreement would cover various aspects of trade beyond just reducing tariffs. Vance pointed out that reaching a trade deal with the UK might be more straightforward compared to other European nations due to the countries maintaining a “reciprocal relationship.” As the UK continues negotiations with the US, Trade Minister Sarah Jones acknowledged the positive position the UK is in but refrained from providing a specific timeline for the progress of talks.

Despite recognizing the potential advantages of a favorable trade deal with the US, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey raised concerns about the reliability of President Trump as a negotiating partner, cautioning against a rushed agreement that could be detrimental to the UK. Following Trump’s imposition of “Liberation Day” tariffs, global stock markets experienced significant losses, with trillions of dollars wiped off the US Stock market in the aftermath. While markets displayed signs of recovery in subsequent days, concerns linger over the lasting impact of the tariff strategy on financial markets.

Vance reiterated the administration’s commitment to reducing trade deficits and acknowledged the inevitable market volatility associated with implementing a new trade system. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of Europe strengthening its self-defense capabilities independently of the United States, underscoring the mutual benefit of Europe not being solely reliant on American security support. Discussing the conflict in Ukraine and allegations of cozying up to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Vance reiterated the administration’s stance on the need for nuanced understanding of all sides involved in the conflict to facilitate a resolution. In response to Russia’s recent deadly attacks in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky extended an invitation to Trump to visit the country before engaging in any negotiations with Russia
