Liverpool film studio scores BAFTA win

A Liverpool studio has recently achieved recognition from the UK film industry for its efforts to become one of the greenest in the country. The Depot, owned by Liverpool City Council and managed by the Film Office, received a ‘Very Good’ rating from the BAFTA Albert sustainable studio standard. This acknowledgment solidifies The Depot’s position as one of the leading net zero studios in the UK, showcasing its commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

Since opening its doors in 2021, The Depot has been the location for acclaimed TV productions such as “This City Is Ours,” “The Gathering,” and “Sexy Beast.” Participating in the BAFTA Albert Studio Sustainability Standard, The Depot scored 80%, higher than the average of 77% among the 31 studios involved. Key strengths of The Depot include using 100% LED studio lighting, offering renewable generators, implementing a sustainability policy, and providing access to green biodiverse spaces.

Suggestions for future improvements at The Depot include the installation of EV charging ports, exploring renewable energy generation feasibility, and enhancing the recycling rate. Launched in 2022, the BAFTA Albert Studio Sustainability Standard focuses on six key areas: Climate, Circularity, Nature, People, Management, and Data, to help studios measure and minimize their environmental impact. This recognition aligns with Liverpool’s status as the world’s first UN Accelerator City for climate action, demonstrating the city’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions across various sectors.

Councillor Liam Robinson, Leader of Liverpool City Council, expressed pride in The Depot’s achievement, highlighting the city’s appeal for sustainable film and TV productions. Head of Liverpool Film Office, Lynn Saunders, emphasized the importance of building a sustainable screen ecosystem and tracking progress to enhance the environment for future generations. Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram, commended The Depot’s ‘Very Good’ rating, emphasizing the city’s commitment to establishing a cleaner, greener economy and achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2035, a decade ahead of the government’s target
