The recent assault on three prison officers at a high-security facility is still under investigation, according to counter-terrorism authorities. The Prison Officers’ Association (POA) reported that Hashem Abedi, one of the individuals involved in the Manchester Arena bombing, attacked the officers, resulting in them being hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred at HMP Frankland in County Durham, with one officer already being discharged from the hospital.
Counter-terrorism policing in the north east is spearheading the inquiry, with assistance from Durham Constabulary. Two of the three officers attacked are still hospitalized with severe injuries, as stated by the counter-terrorism unit. They emphasized that thorough investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances and potential motives behind the attack. The POA revealed that the officers sustained various injuries such as burns, scalds, and stab wounds during the attack by Abedi. Mark Fairhurst, the national chairman of the POA, mentioned that the conditions of the two hospitalized officers have since stabilized. The assault occurred at a separation unit within the prison, designated for housing the most dangerous and extremist inmates. Abedi, who was sentenced to a minimum of 55 years for his role in the 2017 suicide bombing, had also previously attacked two officers at Belmarsh Prison in London.
