Yr Wyddfa parking plea for Wales' highest mountain at Easter

The summit of Yr Wyddfa, also known as Snowdon, is a popular spot for visitors in Wales’ largest national park. This year, precautions are being put in place to avoid parking chaos, with restrictions at Pen y Pass being enforced from now until November. To park at Pen y Pass, visitors must pre-book a slot for £20 for an eight-hour period to prevent issues like traffic mayhem and emergency vehicles being obstructed by double parked cars.

Strict enforcement measures are being taken to discourage people from flouting the rules and parking on the road, including penalty fines and potential car removal by the police. The introduction of pre-booking for parking, along with improved bus services, has significantly reduced problems in the area. According to Catrin Glyn, the partnership project manager, the pre-booking system was necessary due to the dangerous situations observed during and after Covid, such as cars blocking the roads, hindering ambulance access.

The pre-booking scheme, now in its third year, aims to alleviate congestion and encourage visitors to explore the area in alternative ways. While some may find the parking costs at Pen y Pass steep, park officials hope it will motivate individuals to utilize the extensive bus network in the region, including a park-and-ride site with frequent services. Visitor Deshen from London opted to take the bus to Pen y Pass, highlighting the convenience and affordability of public transportation compared to parking fees.

Another visitor, Rachel Brown from Ipswich, expressed regret at not knowing about pre-booking or bus options, as she had to park a mile away resulting in a longer walk. As efforts to reduce carbon emissions are emphasized, park officials are promoting sustainable modes of transportation for exploring the area. The Sherpa bus service, revamped post-Covid, aims to serve both locals and tourists efficiently, providing an eco-friendly means of transportation around the Yr Wyddfa region
