A long-standing record at the BBC motoring show Top Gear has been shattered by the anonymous racing driver The Stig. The Stig achieved the fastest lap around the show’s test track in Surrey, breaking a record that had stood for 20 years. Driving a McMurtry Speirling Pure VP1 electric track car, The Stig completed the 1.75-mile figure of eight circuit at Dunsfold Aerodrome in 55.9 seconds, surpassing the previous record by 3.1 seconds.
The previous record, set in 2004 in a Renault R24 Formula One car by The Stig as well, was 59 seconds. This remarkable achievement left Jack Rix, the editor of Top Gear, in awe, stating that witnessing the long-standing lap record being shattered was an incredible moment. Rix also pondered the possibility of this new record ever being broken, suggesting that only F1 teams feeling bold might have a chance.
This feat is part of BBC Studios’ latest Top Gear YouTube series, Stig Laps, where the mysterious racer takes on the challenge of breaking lap records on the iconic Top Gear test track using some of the rarest and fastest cars in the world. Thomas Yates, co-founder and managing director of McMurtry Automotive, praised the accomplishment, describing it as an immense achievement. The record-breaking lap has captivated fans and enthusiasts, underscoring The Stig’s skill and the capabilities of the McMurtry Speirling Pure VP1.
