Killer jailed for death of 'amazing dad' in Aberdeen street row

Derek Pearson has been sentenced to seven years in prison for the fatal street attack on Steven Johnson in Aberdeen. The incident took place in March 2023, resulting in Mr. Johnson falling and hitting his head, leading to his death in the hospital. Despite Pearson’s denial and claim of self-defense, a jury found him guilty of culpable homicide after a five-day trial at the High Court in Aberdeen.

The victim’s daughter, Charley Reid, expressed her devastation over the loss of her father, whom she described as “the most amazing person ever.” She emphasized the relief of Pearson being incarcerated, preventing him from walking free and taunting them any longer. The tragic chain of events began with CCTV footage showing Mr. Johnson speaking to Pearson’s partner in a bar, leading to a violent altercation outside that resulted in Mr. Johnson’s death.

Judge Graham Buchanan labeled the case as a “tragic incident,” emphasizing the severe consequences of even minor acts of aggression. Pearson’s actions – pushing, pinning, and repeatedly punching Mr. Johnson – led to the fatal outcome. The court heard how Pearson’s loss of control in the moment resulted in a situation where a man lost his life due to needless violence.

Pearson’s defense attorney, David Moggach, acknowledged the tragedy of the situation, noting that the incident was unintentional and expressing sympathy for Mr. Johnson’s family and friends. He described Pearson as remorseful for his actions. Mr. Johnson, survived by his seven children, grandchildren, and other relatives, was remembered by his brother as they try to come to terms with the loss and find closure. Detective Chief Inspector Jamie Sherlock of Police Scotland condemned the senseless violence that resulted in Steven Johnson’s death, offering condolences to the grieving family and friends impacted by Pearson’s vicious actions
