Merseyside Police made a significant arrest and seized suspected counterfeit clothing worth around £80,000 during a routine visit to a store in Liverpool city center. Teaming up with Liverpool City Council’s Trading Standards team, officers discovered a large quantity of clothes and trainers bearing logos from Adidas, Nike, and The North Face that were believed to be fake and sold as authentic products. Moreover, the authorities also confiscated cash from the premises suspected to be earned from the sale of these counterfeit items.
A 69-year-old man from Manchester was taken into custody on suspicion of several crimes including acquiring, using, or possessing criminal property, as well as three counts of applying a trademark likely to be misconstrued for a registered one. He has been released on bail pending further investigations. City center Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant Richard Clare stated, “This arrest is part of our continuous efforts to combat criminal activities in the city center. Together with Trading Standards at the council, we are dedicated to safeguarding the public from substandard or hazardous goods that pose risks to consumers and legitimate businesses.”
Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins, Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Neighborhoods, and Streetscene, highlighted the importance of vigilance against counterfeit goods. She emphasized that counterfeit clothing is of poor quality, potentially unsafe, and often linked to funding illegal activities. This joint effort between the Trading Standards team and the Merseyside Police aims to crack down on the sale of counterfeit products, sending a strong message to retailers that such illicit practices will not be tolerated in the city
