Liverpool to remember Hillsborough anniversary

In Liverpool, a somber moment of reflection will be observed to commemorate the 36th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy. On Tuesday, April 15th at precisely 3:06pm, a minute’s silence will be held in memory of the 97 individuals who tragically lost their lives. Following the silence, a bell will ring 97 times, paying tribute to each victim, followed by an instrumental rendition of the iconic song “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

The commemoration will take place at Exchange Flags, located behind Liverpool Town Hall, and will be led by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Richard Kemp CBE, along with the Leader of Liverpool City Council, Councillor Liam Robinson, and City Council Chief Executive, Andrew Lewis. Members of the public are encouraged to gather at this location to pay their respects.

To allow the public to pay tribute in their own way, Liverpool Town Hall will be open from 2pm to 4pm on the day of the anniversary. Visitors can view a special Freedom of the City plaque engraved with the names of all 97 fans who tragically lost their lives in the disaster. In September 2016, the honor was bestowed upon the first 96 victims, with Andrew Devine’s name added in May 2022, marking the 97th victim of the tragedy.

Civic buildings throughout the city will fly flags at half-mast, and the Town Hall will illuminate in red during the evening as a mark of remembrance. For those unable to attend in person, the Exchange Flags tribute will be livestreamed on Liverpool City Council’s Facebook and Instagram channels starting at 3pm
