Greenpeace UK boss arrested over US embassy dye protest

One of the directors of Greenpeace UK was taken into custody following a demonstration where water was colored red outside the US embassy in London, Greenpeace revealed. Will McCallum, serving as a co-executive director of Greenpeace UK, was one of six individuals arrested by authorities after they protested against the US’s arms sales to Israel. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that six people were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and conspiracy to cause criminal damage during the event.

The US embassy spokesperson stated that the action led to the destruction of a 1.5 million gallon water supply on the premises, resulting in the wastage of a local environmental resource. The embassy representative expressed support for peaceful protests but strongly denounced any form of violence or property damage. Greenpeace UK clarified that the dye applied during the demonstration was non-toxic, biodegradable, and food-grade pond dye that posed no threat to individuals, wildlife, or the environment.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 07:30 BST on Thursday when a group of protesters was seen pouring red dye into a pond near the embassy building. The police noted that the pond was accessible through a public footpath, with no breach or attempted breach of the site’s secure perimeter reported. Following a search of the area, six individuals were arrested by law enforcement. Greenpeace UK disclosed that 12 activists poured 300 liters of “blood-red” dye into the water surrounding the US embassy to draw attention to the impact of US arms sales on the conflict in Gaza.

In a public statement, Greenpeace UK confirmed that Mr. McCallum and five other activists were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause criminal damage. The group criticized the arrests as evidence of the diminishing right to protest in the UK. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, exacerbated by the US’s continued arms sales to Israel, has resulted in a significant loss of life in Gaza. Both parties have blamed each other for the breakdown of a temporary ceasefire, leading to renewed violence and casualties in the region
