An individual who came to the UK in search of asylum has been sentenced to jail for supporting the terrorist organization Islamic State. Hakan Barac, a Turkish national aged 28 from Commercial Road in Newport, posted videos on social media platforms praising terrorists Osama bin Laden and Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. He pleaded guilty to five charges related to sharing terrorist publications online and one charge of endorsing a banned group.
Following his arrival in the country two years ago, Barac was arrested by counter-terrorism authorities last year. The court heard that he uploaded videos on Instagram and Telegram showcasing jihadists preparing for martyrdom and featuring Mohammed Khalifa, a Saudi-born Canadian recruiter. Prosecuting lawyer Ben Lloyd described the content as “extreme” and involving violent imagery. Defense attorney Tim Forte KC stated that Barac accepted guilt based on not intending to encourage or support violent activities, with the posts having limited viewership.
