Domestic violence: Christopher John Black survivor calls for quicker sentencing

A survivor of domestic abuse is urging the justice system to expedite the sentencing of perpetrators following their convictions. Joanne Scott, a 37-year-old mother from Ballygowan in County Down, endured a seven-year relationship with Christopher John Black, 43, of Beechfield Drive in Donaghadee, County Down. Black was recently imprisoned for various offenses against Scott, including sexual assault and assault causing actual bodily harm. The Department of Justice has been contacted for a response.

Describing the justice system as chaotic, Scott expressed her frustration at the repeated delays in the case. Each month brought another adjournment, prolonging the already distressing process. Scott recounted how the abuse began during her pregnancy, escalating over time to physical violence, strict control over her appearance, and other forms of manipulation. She noted that the situation worsened to the point where she ended up in the hospital due to her deteriorating health before returning to face the abuse.

Despite enduring sexual assault, Scott remained in the relationship until a friend intervened, urging her to seek help. This pivotal moment led to her decision to contact the authorities. Reflecting on the sentencing, where Black received a six-year term with three years to be served in prison, Scott expressed relief and a renewed sense of faith in the justice system. She emphasized the importance of speaking out and seeking support, encouraging others in similar situations to persevere through the legal process for the chance of closure and justice.

Scott highlighted the need for a faster justice system to benefit all involved and ensure timely resolutions for victims. She hopes that by sharing her story, she can inspire others facing domestic violence to navigate the legal system and seek the assistance available to them. Stressing the importance of taking every opportunity for support, Scott emphasized the transformative power of speaking up and seeking justice
