Stonehouse chippy apologises for prices as fish costs surge

Apologies were issued by a chip shop in Gloucestershire as prices increased due to a significant surge in fish costs of more than 60% within a three-month period. The Nippy Chippy in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, is now charging £12.50 for a large cod and £10 for haddock. Manager Brad Lee mentioned that while most customers responded politely to the price hike, there were some who displayed “shocked faces” in reaction.

According to Brad Lee, reduced fishing quotas in the North Sea were cited by suppliers as the reason behind the wholesale price hike of fish. However, the government clarified that this year’s agreement is aimed at maintaining sustainable stock levels. He also noted that attempts to find alternative options in the past had not been well-received, stating that while different types of white fish had been tried, feedback was not positive. Cod is preferred due to its taste and texture, especially when paired with batter, but consideration may be given to alternative options if prices continue to escalate.

Fishing quotas are typically negotiated annually by the UK, EU, and Norway. This year, there is a 20% decrease in the cod limit, set at 25,028 tonnes, and a 5% reduction in the haddock limit, capped at 112,400 tonnes. Despite the challenges posed by the current quota system, Andrew Crook from the National Federation of Fish Fryers expressed optimism that quotas could potentially increase in the future, leading to a more stable market. The popular choice of fish and chips remains a Friday night tradition in the UK, with Mr. Lee emphasizing the significance of this dish in British culture.

Following the agreement on fishing quotas for the year, Fisheries Minister Daniel Zeichner highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting the British fishing industry. The secured deal allocates a fleet quota worth up to £310m for stocks like cod and haddock while prioritizing the long-term sustainability of stock levels. Despite the temporary challenges posed by price increases, efforts are being made to ensure the viability of the fishing industry for both businesses and consumers
