UK weather: Temperatures set to reach 22C on Friday amid wildfire warnings

As we kick off the month of April, the UK is set to experience some balmy weather, with temperatures potentially hitting 23C in some parts on Friday. Southern England is expected to enjoy highs in the low 20s, while the Algarve in Portugal will see highs of 18C despite some showers. Throughout the weekend and into Monday, temperatures are predicted to stay in the mid to high teens for England, Wales, and parts of Scotland. The skies will mostly be clear, with some cloud cover anticipated for eastern Scotland and England on Saturday.

The Met Office has raised concerns over potential wildfires in parts of England, southern Scotland, and Northern Ireland due to the dry conditions and strong winds. Last month was the sunniest March on record since 1910, with the UK experiencing only 43% of its usual rainfall. There is a possibility that the highest temperature recorded this year – 21.3C in Chertsey, Surrey, and Northolt, London – will be exceeded. Cities like London, Reading, Oxford, and Cambridge are expected to bask in 22C warmth on Friday, while Cardiff and Carmarthen in Wales could see temperatures of 21C around the same time. In contrast, Scotland and Northern Ireland are forecasted to be relatively cooler, with highs of 11C for Edinburgh and 16C for Belfast.

As the weekend approaches, temperatures are expected to cool slightly, reaching a high of 19C in southern England. Authorities are urging the public to refrain from lighting fires outdoors as the warm, dry conditions provide the perfect breeding ground for wildfires. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has highlighted the heightened risk of fires spreading due to the current weather conditions. With vegetation drier than usual, the risk of fires escalating is a major concern. Additionally, strong winds are likely to persist, potentially accelerating the spread of any wildfires.

Parts of southwest England and Wales may see some rain on Friday morning, although this is expected to clear by mid-morning. The weekend is predicted to be predominantly dry, with some rain forecasted for northern Scotland on Monday afternoon. Moving into the next week, high pressure will once again dominate the UK, bringing lighter winds and more dry, sunny weather that will see temperatures rise above the seasonal average
