Michael Sheen has announced his latest project, taking on the role of Owain Glyndŵr, the last Welsh-born Prince of Wales, in an upcoming theatre production. The play, titled Owain & Henry, will focus on Glyndŵr’s rebellion against English rule in Wales during the 15th Century and is one of the inaugural productions by Welsh National Theatre, Sheen’s newly established theatre company.
Glyndŵr is known for becoming a symbol of Welsh nationalism, with numerous statues, monuments, and street names dedicated to him across Wales. Sheen, who has previously expressed his belief that the Royal family should relinquish the Prince of Wales title, described portraying Glyndŵr as embodying “the iconic Welsh prince.”
The production, set to take place at Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff in November 2026, promises to explore the historical significance of Glyndŵr as a pivotal figure in Welsh history. Sheen expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to tell this essential story on a grand scale, emphasizing the relevance of Glyndŵr’s quest for an independent Wales in today’s world.
