Liverpool and Dublin reignite twin city agreement

The process of revitalizing the twinning agreement between Liverpool and Dublin has officially commenced. This sister city arrangement, established in 1997, symbolizes the deep-rooted and shared history between the two cities. Recently, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Emma Blain, paid a visit to Liverpool to engage with her counterparts: Cllr Richard Kemp, Council Leader, Cllr Liam Robinson, and Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram.

During the meeting, various opportunities for collaboration between the two cities were explored, focusing on areas such as culture, tourism, and the broader economy. Councillor Robinson highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating that 75% of Liverpool’s population has some form of Irish heritage. He emphasized the potential for enhanced cooperation post-Brexit, particularly in strengthening economic ties between the two cities.

Lord Mayor Blain expressed her pride and excitement at reactivating the twinning agreement between Dublin and Liverpool. She acknowledged the longstanding cultural, social, and economic connections between the two cities, spanning across Liverpool’s renowned sectors in music, arts, commerce, industry, sport, and education. Blain also mentioned her anticipation in visiting key institutions in Liverpool, such as the University of Liverpool Materials Innovation Factory and Institute of Irish Studies, as part of her trip. She extended her gratitude to the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Richard Kemp CBE, and the Leader of Liverpool City Council, Liam Robinson, for their warm invitation and commitment to further developing the partnership
