Lucy Vladev reported on a disturbing incident at Cardiff Crown Court involving a man who viciously attacked a police officer. Richard Nodwell, 37, assaulted Gwent Police officer Nathan Attwell in Cwmbran, Torfaen, on 20 December 2024, inflicting severe injuries. PC Attwell suffered a fractured cheekbone and broken nose after being struck at least 12 times during the assault, which occurred while he was responding to a 999 call.
Nodwell pleaded guilty to various charges including grievous bodily harm with intent and assault by beating of an emergency worker. As a result, he was sentenced to nine years and four months in jail, with an extended licence period of three years. The attack left PC Attwell hospitalized with significant facial injuries, prompting Judge Hywel James to describe the incident as a “violent and sustained attack” on an officer who was simply carrying out his duty to protect the public.
In a victim impact statement, PC Attwell revealed that he feared for his safety even after returning home from the hospital, and voiced concerns about the long-term physical and mental impact of the assault. He expressed relief at being offered a new role as a police trainer, as the traumatic incident has left him apprehensive about resuming his regular duties. Chief Constable Mark Hobrough noted the profound effect the attack had on the policing team, with some members considering leaving the profession as a result of the violence they face in the line of duty.
The Crown Prosecution Service condemned Nodwell’s actions, labeling them as a “sickening act of violence” against an officer carrying out his lawful duties. PC Attwell’s bravery and professionalism in the face of aggression were commended by Judge James, who emphasized the serious physical harm and vulnerability the officer experienced during the assault. This incident underscores the risks that law enforcement personnel face daily to keep communities safe and the ongoing challenges they encounter in the line of duty
