Landlords 'cashing in' on Sizewell C jobs boom, claim locals

Sizewell C is intended to produce enough electricity to supply six million homes

It is estimated that some 2,400 jobs will be created during the construction of the twin-unit plant – potentially rising to 5,600 at peak times.

Leiston councillor Terry Shaw says he has heard anecdotal reports of Sizewell C contractors snapping up rental properties, but adds that affordable homes provision is a condition of planning agreements.

“It is very disappointing to hear of these rent rises, and right now it is a difficult time for everybody,” he says.

“But because the government has given planning permission to Sizewell C, any opportunistic business will try to get the best from it. Clearly, the situation has come about by the plant’s anticipated arrival and people’s greed.”

The future for residents in the area remains uncertain, with a final decision on whether Sizewell C should go ahead pending
