Exploring the connection between mental wellbeing and seed saving is shedding light on the positive impact this activity can have. Catherine Howell, who has been involved in community food projects for over 15 years, noticed a potential correlation between saving and sharing seeds and the well-being of growers. To further investigate this, Howell initiated a pilot project in collaboration with the Gaia Foundation’s Seed Sovereignty program. Fifteen individuals experiencing challenges with mental health participated in this project, meeting regularly throughout 2024 in various locations.
Each session of the project began with a mental health check-in, and participants were asked to rate their mental wellbeing at the beginning and end of the course. Despite facing significant challenges during the year, the average mental wellbeing score of participants increased by 6%, with the most significant improvements seen in those who initially had lower scores. One participant noted a notable increase in their score from 2/5 to 4/5, attributing it to the opportunity to learn in a supportive environment. These findings align with a study conducted by Canadian researchers that found positive impacts on health and wellbeing through community seed saving.
Participant Laurissa Papprill shared her experience of growing ‘yard long’ beans, a practice that brought her joy and a sense of fulfillment. Author Kathy Slack, whose memoir delves into the therapeutic nature of growing vegetables, explained the symbolic relevance of sowing a seed as an act of hope for the future. The project instilled a sense of abundance and optimism in participants, highlighting the transformative power of engaging with nature. Catherine Howell plans to continue supporting the group and hopes to organize another course in the upcoming year to further explore the benefits of seed saving on mental wellbeing.
