In honor of the reopening of Spellow Community Hub and Library, a creative writing program was launched by Writing on the Wall, commissioned by Culture Liverpool, to celebrate the vibrant culture and history of Walton. Angela Cheveau, a local participant, shared her journey from despair to healing through this initiative.
Spellow Library held a special place in Angela’s childhood, a magical sanctuary where she and her mother would pick out books every Saturday. As a timid child, the library provided solace and a realm of enchantment, allowing her to escape into countless imaginative worlds. Books served as gateways to different realities, offering an escape from the challenges of growing up in a socially deprived neighborhood. Angela found empowerment within the pages, transforming into different personas and exploring uncharted territories with the stroke of a pen.
The devastating events of August 2024 witnessed Angela, along with fellow residents, in a state of despair as they watched their beloved library engulfed in flames. The destruction was a blow to the community, robbing them of a vital space for education and knowledge. Despite the heartache, glimmers of hope emerged in the aftermath, showcasing acts of bravery, compassion, and unity. From individuals like Adam Kelwick and Alex McCormick to local policemen and generous shop owners, the resilience and kindness of Walton’s residents shone through the darkness.
Participating in the workshops organized by Writing on the Wall was a source of pride for Angela, who viewed it as an opportunity to celebrate the resilience and unity of her community. Through storytelling, poetry, and art, local residents were able to express their emotions, fears, and dreams, turning adversity into creativity. As they prepare to showcase their work at a launch event and in an anthology, Angela reflects on the power of community coming together for the greater good, proving that transformation and hope can arise from even the darkest of times
