Amen Teklay: Memorial service for schoolboy killed in Glasgow

A service to honor Amen Teklay, the teenage victim of a tragic incident in Glasgow earlier this month, was recently held in the city. The 15-year-old passed away after being discovered with serious injuries in the St George’s Cross area on March 5. Those close to him gathered at Kinning Park Parish Church to pay their respects to the “bright” and “kind” schoolboy. Plans are underway to transport Amen’s body to Ethiopia for a proper funeral service.

Originally from Eritrea, Amen had been residing in Glasgow with his father for a number of years. Recently, he had obtained “right to remain” status in the UK. Following the memorial service at the church, emotional scenes unfolded as Amen’s coffin was taken away in a hearse. Jamie O’Neill, a Support Worker at Kingsway Community Connections who worked closely with Amen, expressed the pain of seeing young individuals mourn the loss of someone as special as Amen.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, three teenagers – aged 14, 15, and 16 – have appeared in Glasgow Sheriff court in connection with Amen’s death. The 14 and 16-year-olds have been remanded in custody after facing murder charges, while the 15-year-old is accused of assault. A crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe has been launched to support Amen’s family, with donations nearing the £10,000 target.
