on could deliver jobs boom
Investing in net zero emissions could create millions of good-quality jobs in the UK, a new report showed.
The analysis by think tank Autonomy estimated that 1.82 million jobs could be created by 2030, and 2.65 million by 2040 through government action on the climate crisis.
“This climate plan builds on the idea that monumental public investment is essential to creating millions of green jobs,” the report stated.
It was published amid growing pressure on the UK government to do more to tackle the climate, after MPs raised concern over a lack of urgency in the efforts to hit ambitious emissions targets.
“The UK needs to put its money where its mouth is when it comes to climate,” author of the report, Antonia Jennings, told BBC News.
The findings indicate that investing in sectors like retrofitting homes, installing renewable energy, boosting public transport and protecting biodiversity could provide large numbers of jobs, while helping to reduce emissions.
