The Ministry of Defence (MoD) responded swiftly to the situation, stating that they were urgently looking into the matter and conducting an internal investigation. The papers seem to be connected to British Army regiments and barracks at Catterick Garrison. One notable document was labeled “armoury keys and hold IDS codes,” which hints at accessing an armor and intruder detection system. Another document marked “official – sensitive” raised concerns as it could potentially lead to a threat to life if compromised.
Information security consultant Gary Hibberd emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the potential risks to individuals named in the documents. The sensitive nature of the information could have severe consequences if it fell into the wrong hands. The guidance on handling such documents underscores the importance of proper disposal methods, such as using a “burn bag” or shredding in an approved machine to prevent any unauthorized access to classified data.
Upon discovering the scattered papers, Mike Gibbard, the football fan, immediately reported the find to Northumbria Police. The authorities confirmed receiving a report about potentially confidential documents on Railway Street in the Scotswood area of Newcastle.
