Rachel Reeves won't take more free tickets after backlash

Labour MP Rachel Reeves has decided to forgo accepting free concert tickets in the future after facing backlash for attending a Sabrina Carpenter gig with tickets valued at £600. Reeves, who had previously defended her choice to watch the American singer from a box at the O2 arena in London, now acknowledges the negative perceptions surrounding the acceptance of such gifts.

In an interview with ITV, Reeves explained that due to security reasons, she was unable to purchase regular tickets and was offered the box seats by AEG, the arena’s owner. She expressed the challenges of balancing her responsibilities as a parent with the security needs of her role as Chancellor, stating that she had been trying to maintain a sense of normalcy with her family.

Reeves emphasized her understanding of public perceptions and announced her decision not to accept free tickets in the future, except in cases where it is necessary for her job. The tickets she received have been declared on her public register of interests, as per the new rules that emphasize the importance of maintaining public trust.

While Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer had initially supported Reeves, Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook expressed his personal opinion that accepting free concert tickets may not be appropriate. Reeves, on the other hand, admitted that she is not a big fan of Sabrina Carpenter and that she only attended the concert from a box for security reasons, despite preferring regular seats for a more comfortable experience with her family
