Three men from Londonderry have admitted to possessing a document that claimed responsibility for the attempted murder of Det Ch Insp John Caldwell in 2023. The accused individuals, Caolan Robert Brogan, Tiarnan McFadden, and a third man whose identity remains undisclosed for legal reasons, appeared at Belfast Crown Court. The trio faced charges related to possessing the incriminating document.

Originally scheduled to begin a non-jury trial on Tuesday, defense barristers requested that the three men be re-arraigned before the trial commenced. The initial charge of electronically transmitting the contents of the document was withdrawn, with the proceedings focusing solely on the possession charge. The case is set for review by Judge Kerr on 19 May to establish a sentencing timeline.

Following the court appearance, the three defendants were granted bail until the sentencing hearing. The prosecution emphasized that the facts surrounding the case were encompassed within the plea to the possession charge. With the resolution of the transmitting charge, the focus is now on the impending sentencing phase for the involved individuals
