Pizza Hut workers accuse franchisee of docking wages

Zoe Conway, an employment correspondent, reported that Pizza Hut workers in Scotland are accusing the Glenshire Group, which manages 22 Pizza Hut delivery outlets, of engaging in “blatantly unlawful” behavior. The workers have alleged that the company has adjusted timesheets, reduced wages, and terminated per-delivery payments without consultation. One delivery driver, named Cian, expressed his concerns to the BBC, stating that Glenshire has shown disregard for its staff and customers, describing the situation as “quite honestly abysmal.”

Cian, a 30-year-old delivery driver based in west Glasgow, has been working for Glenshire for over two years. He was previously paid the National Living Wage plus a fee for each delivery. However, without warning, his terms and conditions were altered, leading to an increase in hourly pay but the elimination of delivery payments. This sudden change has caused financial strain for Cian and several other drivers, with some quitting due to the inability to cover fuel costs. Glenshire justified the modifications by stating that they are necessary for the company’s sustainability.

Unite’s head of hospitality, Bryan Simpson, has criticized Glenshire’s actions, labeling them as a “cynical attempt to offload over 100 drivers” before upcoming wage increases. Simpson raised concerns that the loss of commission per delivery may bring workers below the minimum wage threshold, resulting in substantial income reductions. The union has filed a grievance against Glenshire, accusing the company of fraudulent practices related to timesheets and retroactively added break deductions.

Cian emphasized the importance of speaking out against Glenshire’s mistreatment of employees, despite the potential risk of losing his job. He highlighted the unethical behavior of the company and urged others to stand up against injustice. The Glenshire Group has faced backlash from both employees and legal experts, with warnings of potential breaches of minimum wage regulations. Calls for an investigation and intervention from Pizza Hut UK have been made to address the concerning employment practices within the Glenshire franchise
