Artwork wows the public and highlights road technology

A spectacular glow-in-the-dark artwork has been revealed in the heart of Liverpool ONE. This unique painting, commissioned as part of the ADEPT Live Labs 2 program, can be found at the corner of Hanover Street and College Lane in Liverpool ONE. The initiative, backed by Liverpool City Council, is part of a nationwide effort to reduce carbon emissions in the local highway network.

Liverpool City Council is taking the lead in implementing smart road technologies across the city, including roads, pedestrian crossings, and cycle paths. The goal is to enhance air quality, decrease carbon emissions, ease traffic congestion, and promote sustainable communities. The artwork, named ‘Harmony’ and created by Reskate Studio, showcases Luminokrom, a phosphorescent paint that illuminates the streets at night without the need for electricity or additional emissions.

Reskate’s ‘Harreman Project’ features glow-in-the-dark artworks throughout Europe, emphasizing the relationship between art, nature, and innovation in building a brighter future. The collective aims to raise awareness about environmental protection and engage the public through their artistic installations. Led by artists Minuskula and Javier de Riba, Reskate is renowned for their meaningful and aesthetically pleasing murals that blend seamlessly with their surroundings.

Under the ADEPT Live Labs 2 program, local authorities are collaborating with commercial and academic partners to explore new ways to reduce carbon footprints and promote sustainability within the local highway network. Councilor Daniel Barrington praised the new artwork, describing it as a captivating piece that transitions from day to night in a mesmerizing way. Donna Howitt, Place Strategy Director at Liverpool ONE, highlighted the importance of supporting art and culture to spark conversations and inspire visitors. Minuskula, one of the artists involved, expressed pride in creating a piece that symbolizes the concerns of youth and offers hope for a better future through artistic expression
