Scots tourist in hospital after Rome holiday explosion

A tourist from Scotland has been seriously injured in what appears to be a gas explosion that destroyed his vacation home in Rome. Grant Paterson, 54, was rescued from the rubble of a three-story building in the Monteverde area of the Italian capital on Saturday morning. He is currently receiving treatment for severe burns at Rome’s Sant’Eugenio hospital. Roberto Gualtieri, the Mayor of Rome, has visited the scene and initiated an investigation into the explosion.

The explosion occurred while Mr. Paterson, who works for Scottish ferry operator CalMac, was on a solo trip in Rome. He had arrived in the city just a week prior and had expressed excitement about his accommodation in a social media post. Local news site Roma Today reported that he was conscious when he was pulled from the ruins but is believed to have sustained serious burns covering 75% of his body.

Mayor Gualtieri stated to reporters that the exact condition of Mr. Paterson is unknown, but it is evident that he suffered burns, indicating that the explosion was likely caused by gas. The blast was so intense that a building collapsed, and the wall of Villa Pamphili was also affected. The authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the cause of the explosion that resulted in such devastating consequences for the Scottish tourist
