Following a major chemical incident in St Leonards, Sussex Police have confirmed that the situation has been “stood down” and the majority of the 80 evacuated individuals have been able to return home. The incident involved a controlled burn of chemicals found in a property on the A259 Marina, with the police taking action on Saturday to address the situation.

As a result of the incident, the Hastings half marathon, scheduled for Sunday, was canceled, impacting over 3,000 participants who were expected to take part. Nice Work, the event organizer, made the decision to call off the race on Saturday evening, acknowledging the disappointment it would bring to many individuals.

In the aftermath of the incident, it was revealed that approximately 500 additional cannisters were discovered during the police operation, with the chemicals contained in them deemed non-explosive. A 28-year-old individual has been detained under the Mental Health Act as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

While a cordon remains in place in the affected area, efforts are being made to support residents who are unable to return home as testing continues in close proximity to their residences. Those who were eagerly anticipating the half marathon expressed their frustration and disappointment over the cancellation of the event, highlighting the unforeseen circumstances that led to this decision.

The organizers of the event, Nice Work, expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support received from participants, volunteers, and associates during this challenging time. Despite the difficulties faced, they reassured participants that they would provide further updates on the situation.
