Norovirus outbreak sees visitors banned from hospitals

Amid a recent outbreak of norovirus, hospitals have taken strict measures to ensure the safety of their patients, staff, and visitors by banning all general visiting. The Cardiff and Vale University Health Board made the decision to halt all visitor access in order to prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus, which can be transmitted through contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces such as toilet flush handles.

Exceptions to the visiting ban may be granted under certain circumstances, with the health board indicating that critical care patients, those receiving end-of-life care, birth partners, and individuals at the Children’s Hospital for Wales may be considered for visitation. However, the restrictions will remain in place for the time being and will be subject to review in the following week.

Norovirus, characterized by symptoms like sudden vomiting, diarrhea, high fever, stomach pains, and body aches, generally resolves on its own within a few days for most individuals. Despite this, some cases can escalate to severe illness, necessitating hospital care.
