M25: Drivers warned as final motorway closure begins

The M25 motorway in Surrey is undergoing significant renovation work, leading to the closure of a stretch between junction 10 and junction 11 for the fifth and final time. This closure is necessary for the demolition and removal of an old bridge as part of a £317m project aimed at adding extra lanes to enhance safety and reduce congestion at the junction with the A3. Drivers are being advised to avoid the area unless absolutely necessary, with diversion routes in place to help manage traffic flow during the closure.

Originally scheduled for completion in the summer of 2022, the project deadline has been pushed back to spring 2026 due to delays caused by adverse weather conditions. Despite challenges faced during previous closures, National Highways is confident that the end is in sight. Senior project manager Jonathan Wade described the ongoing work as “complex” but assured that the project is now approaching its final stages. However, final decisions will be made by the Department of Transport, maintaining control over the project’s progress.

Drivers are encouraged to plan for additional travel time and utilize alternative routes where possible. Official diversions have been put in place to guide motorists, as exemplified by a recent incident where a HGV driver had to be rescued after following inaccurate directions from a mapping application. The Department of Transport is yet to provide a statement regarding the ongoing renovation works on the M25 motorway.
