Belfast: NI airports tells Heathrow-bound passengers not to travel

Flights to and from Heathrow Airport in London have been thrown into chaos due to a fire near the airport, resulting in significant impacts on flights from the island of Ireland. The airport is set to remain closed throughout Friday following a fire at a nearby electrical substation that supplies power to the airport. Flightradar24, a flight tracking website, has estimated that at least 1,351 flights to and from the UK’s busiest airport could be cancelled on Friday.

Passengers flying to Heathrow from Belfast City and City of Derry airports have been strongly advised not to travel to the airports and to contact their respective airlines. Belfast City Airport’s website shows numerous flights to and from Heathrow as cancelled, highlighting the extent of the disruption caused by the fire near Heathrow Airport. According to a representative from Heathrow, the terminals had to be closed due to the lack of clarity on when power would be reliably restored following the fire.

The London Fire Brigade has confirmed that the fire at the electricity substation in Hayes, which led to the disruption at Heathrow Airport, is now under control. City of Derry Airport has also confirmed the cancellation of all flights to Heathrow on Friday, urging passengers to contact their airlines for alternative arrangements. While Belfast International Airport remains operational, it has stated that flights to Heathrow do not operate through their airport.

Dublin Airport has been significantly affected by the fire, with all flights between Dublin and London Heathrow on Friday being cancelled. The airport warned affected passengers to get in touch with their airlines for further guidance. Graeme McQueen, a media relations manager at the Dublin Airport Authority, anticipates that the disruption could last for several days, urging passengers to consider alternative London airports due to the prolonged impact. Shannon Airport has accommodated diverted flights from Heathrow, ensuring passengers’ safety and continuity of travel amidst the ongoing disruption
