Liverpool is looking to extend a scheme that provides furniture and domestic appliances to individuals in crisis. The Citizens Support Scheme’s ‘home needs’ element aids residents who struggle to afford essential items such as refrigerators, ovens, sofas, and beds. Last year, the scheme, valued at £1.4 million and managed by Liverpool-based social enterprise The Furniture Resource Centre, granted 12,000 awards.
A proposal to extend the ‘home needs’ element of the contract for another 12 months will be presented at the upcoming Cabinet meeting on March 25, with plans for a new long-term contract to be awarded later in the year. In addition to supporting residents with essential goods, the Citizens Support Scheme also addresses ‘urgent needs’ like food and fuel costs, providing 11,000 awards totaling £800,000 in the previous year.
Deputy Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, Resources, and Transformation, Cllr Ruth Bennett, emphasized the importance of the Citizens Support Scheme in assisting low-income households in Liverpool. Bennett stated, “This is a scheme that is discretionary but that we choose to provide because it is absolutely vital that residents – whatever their background – have access to basic household appliances and furniture.” The Council Tax Support Scheme and Benefits Maximisation Service are also part of Liverpool’s efforts to support vulnerable households.
