A fresh initiative has recently been introduced in Liverpool known as the Liverpool Foster Care Association (LFCA), spearheaded by foster carers themselves. Supported by Liverpool City Council, this marks a significant milestone in enhancing the fostering community within the city and ensuring that foster carers are adequately supported in providing optimal care for children. The LFCA has been established to create a specialized network for foster carers, offering peer support, advocacy, and the opportunity to exchange experiences, knowledge, and advice.
Liverpool City Council has made a commitment to collaborate closely with the LFCA, as outlined in a service level agreement with quarterly meetings. Social workers and other professionals will collaborate with the LFCA to design a support system that prioritizes the well-being of both foster carers and children. The launch event took place at Anfield, with the assistance of the LFC Foundation, featuring an aerial gymnastics performance set to music by Brad Kella, who has firsthand experience of growing up in foster care. The launch was further supported by The Lodge Wellness Centre, Costco, and Home and Bargains.
In the words of Cllr Liz Parsons, Cabinet Member for Children’s Social Services, “The establishment of Liverpool’s Foster Care Association offers foster carers the invaluable opportunity to be part of a community that understands and supports them. This initiative not only allows foster carers to have a collective voice but also enables them to build networks, exchange experiences, and provide additional layers of support to one another”. Peter, a foster carer with 18 years of experience in Liverpool and also serving as the chair of the Liverpool Foster Care Association, emphasized the significance of this association, stating, “This is more than just an association—it’s the beginning of foster carers uniting to shape the future of fostering in Liverpool. Through our collective efforts, we are strengthening our fostering community, offering mutual support, and ensuring that every child in care receives the best possible start in life.
