Benefits cuts: NI politicians warn against UK cuts

In Northern Ireland, politicians have cautioned the UK government against implementing cuts to benefits. It is anticipated that ministers will unveil plans to reduce spending on health and disability benefits. Alliance Party MP Sorcha Eastwood criticized the potential cuts, stating that it would exploit vulnerable individuals to balance the government’s financial books. Similarly, the SDLP’s Colum Eastwood labeled the proposals as immoral and unethical.

The current Prime Minister contends that the existing benefit system discourages individuals from seeking employment, which he deems unsustainable, indefensible, and unfair. The government aims to tighten the qualifications for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in order to generate savings and adhere to its tax and spending regulations. The reforms package is expected to emphasize facilitating employment opportunities and safeguarding payments for the most susceptible.

Sorcha Eastwood believes that the proposed changes will exacerbate poverty rather than foster employment. She advocates for a focus on alleviating poverty rather than exacerbating it, emphasizing the need for improved support systems for disabled individuals. Colum Eastwood echoed these sentiments, highlighting that the cuts could further impede disabled individuals from leading fulfilling lives. Becca Bor from the Northern Ireland Anti-Poverty Network suggested exploring alternative revenue sources instead of targeting disabled individuals.
