Revised Council Tax Support Scheme introduced

In Liverpool, a new, simpler Council Tax Support Scheme for working-age individuals will be implemented next month. This scheme provides a discount to low-income households on their annual tax bill, with about one-third of Liverpool households currently benefiting from it.

The upcoming changes, set to take effect in April, aim to assist those on the lowest incomes, ensure ease of understanding, and offer incentives for individuals transitioning into employment. Under the new scheme, households will receive a 12-month award to help them budget by knowing the exact reduction in their Council Tax bill for the year.

Moreover, these changes align with Universal Credit, provide stability for individuals entering or leaving the workforce, and continue to offer crucial support to those most in need. Despite being financially sustainable, the revamped scheme remains one of the most generous among major UK cities and within the Liverpool City Region.

The adjustments include extending the upper and lower limits in net earning bands for couples by £50 per week and increasing it by £25 per child per week for households with children. Additionally, the maximum Council Tax discount percentage has decreased from 91.5 per cent to 84 per cent, with awards capped at the level of a Band B property.
