59 people killed and over 150 injured in North Macedonia nightclub fire

A tragic incident occurred over the weekend in North Macedonia, as a fire broke out at a nightclub, resulting in the loss of 59 lives and leaving over 150 people injured. The blaze started in the early hours of Sunday, believed to have been ignited by pyrotechnics at the Kočani nightclub Pulse at around 2:30AM local time.

During the incident, approximately 500 individuals were present at the venue enjoying a performance by the popular North Macedonian hip hop group DNK. Sadly, out of the five members of the band, only one member survived the fire. The BBC reported that a total of 155 individuals sustained injuries from the incident, and investigations revealed that the nightclub was operating without a license.

Following the tragic event, 20 individuals came under scrutiny, with 15 of them being detained in relation to the incident. North Macedonia’s Interior Minister Pance Toskovski indicated suspicions of bribery and corruption linked to the blaze. The government announced plans for an emergency session as investigations continue to determine the cause of the fire, which authorities believe started when pyrotechnic flames made contact with the venue’s roof.

Reports indicate that the nightclub, described as “improvised,” was previously a carpet warehouse, with initial inspections uncovering abnormalities within the venue. North Macedonia’s President, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, expressed shock over the tragic news and emphasized the importance of adhering to standards and rules to prevent future harm to innocent individuals
