UK weather: Rising temperatures forecast to bring warm start to spring

As astronomical spring begins on Thursday, the UK is set to experience a significant warm-up with temperatures potentially reaching 18C in the southern regions. This increase in temperature, expected to be seven or eight degrees above the average for this time of year, is a welcome change after a colder start to the week. Areas like West Wales, central, and southern England are likely to see the highest temperatures, although cloud cover could influence the actual heat experienced.

In contrast, the northern parts of the UK are forecasted to have slightly lower temperatures with Edinburgh reaching around 10C and Belfast around 13C. Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell expressed optimism about the upcoming weather, mentioning the potential for a spring-like feel due to the warmer air brought in by southerly winds. Despite the pleasant conditions, Mitchell noted that the warmest day of the year so far was on 9 March when Crosby recorded a temperature of 19.7C.

The early part of the week is expected to have frosty nights and daytime temperatures around average. Monday will start off cloudy but is likely to clear up towards the evening, leading to a sunny Tuesday. While Wednesday will be mostly fine in the north, there may be some cloud cover and a chance of showers in the southern half of the UK. Daytime temperatures are anticipated to be in the mid-teens in the south and low teens in the north. Thursday is expected to be another mostly fine day as mist and fog lift, yielding even warmer temperatures with highs reaching the low to mid-teens in the north and mid-to-high teens in central and southern areas.

However, the warm weather on Thursday may be short-lived as rain is predicted to move in from the south overnight, making for a less settled and slightly cooler day on Friday. This heat surge aligns with the spring equinox, signaling the beginning of astronomical spring that will arrive just after 09:00 on 20 March. The change in seasons is set to bring about a shift in weather patterns, with the UK transitioning from the remnants of winter to the blossoming of spring
