BBC News reporter Stewart Whittiingham has covered the heartwrenching story of a 19-month-old girl from Liverpool who suffered a brain haemorrhage while on holiday in Mexico. The young girl, named Sienna-Rose, collapsed in Cancun and underwent life-saving surgery, but the family faced a daunting challenge of raising over £100,000 to fly her back to the UK in a plane equipped with specialized medical equipment. Thanks to the overwhelming support and generosity of donors, more than £150,000 was raised, enabling the charity Lia’s Wings to organize a medical flight back home for Sienna-Rose and her mother Natasha.

After a grueling 11-hour journey covering 5,000 miles from Mexico, Sienna-Rose arrived at Liverpool’s Alder Hey Children’s Hospital alongside her mother. The medical plane had to make a stop in Canada for refueling during the arduous trip. Despite the challenges they faced, Sienna-Rose is currently in stable condition at the hospital, where it is anticipated that she will need extensive rehabilitation to regain her ability to walk and speak fully. Lia’s Wings CEO Charlotte Young commended the family’s courage and resilience, emphasizing their inspiring journey to recovery.

As Sienna-Rose continues her fight for recovery, Natasha shared the harrowing experience that led them to this point. The mother expressed the traumatic nature of witnessing her daughter’s health deteriorate rapidly, culminating in an emergency operation to address the life-threatening situation. Natasha credited the outpouring of support from the community, both locally in Liverpool and from across the country, for helping bring Sienna-Rose back home. The family expressed their immense gratitude for the assistance received and acknowledged the long road ahead as they navigate Sienna-Rose’s rehabilitation process
