The Metropolitan Police has renewed its appeal to the son of a wealthy individual suspected of the rape and murder of a Norwegian student in London 17 years ago to return to the UK. The victim, 23-year-old Martine Vik Magnussen, was found dead in a basement on Great Portland Street in 2008. The prime suspect, Farouk Abdulhak, fled to Yemen shortly after her death and claimed in a 2023 interview with the BBC that she died due to a “sex accident gone wrong.”
A post-mortem report revealed that Ms. Magnussen had died from neck compression and had several cuts and bruises on her body. Police investigations suggested that she had been sexually assaulted around the time of her death. Her father, Odd Petter Magnussen, expressed frustration over the lack of justice in the case, emphasizing that violence against women is a global crisis that must be confronted. He urged Abdulhak to return to the UK from Yemen, a country that does not have an extradition agreement with the UK.
Both Ms. Magnussen and Mr. Abdulhak had attended Regent’s Business School in London and were last seen together leaving a nightclub in Mayfair in 2008. CCTV footage showed them leaving the club together, with friends reporting that Abdulhak had invited them to an after-party at his residence on Great Portland Street. Two days later, Ms. Magnussen’s body was discovered in the basement of the building, but Abdulhak had already left the country. In a subsequent interview with the BBC, Abdulhak admitted to making a mistake and described the incident as an accidental outcome of drug use.
Speaking to the media, Abdulhak expressed remorse for his actions and regret for not facing the consequences earlier. Despite maintaining his innocence of murder, he expressed skepticism about receiving a fair trial in the UK and indicated reluctance to return. Detective Inspector Jim Barry of the Metropolitan Police reaffirmed the commitment to seeking justice for Ms. Magnussen, urging Abdulhak to take responsibility for his actions and provide a full account of the events leading to her tragic death in court
