Hundreds of mourners gathered at Llandaff Cathedral for the funeral of former Plaid Cymru leader, Lord Elis-Thomas. Among them were past and present senior politicians, civil servants, and various other political figures. King Charles paid tribute to Lord Elis-Thomas in a letter, honoring his intellect and wit.
Lord Elis-Thomas, who passed away at the age of 78 on 7 February after a brief illness, was hailed as one of the most influential figures in Welsh politics over the past five decades. A former culture minister, he represented Dwyfor Meirionnydd in the Senedd for 22 years and previously served as an MP for 18 years. The funeral service was attended by a distinguished congregation reflecting Wales’ public life history.
In a moving eulogy at the service, Dr Aled Eirug, Lord Elis-Thomas’ friend and biographer, described him as a courageous and patriotic politician, a nation builder, and an excellent companion over a glass of wine. The attendees also heard from current Llywydd Elin Jones, who paid tribute to Lord Elis-Thomas’ pivotal role in shaping the Senedd for the 21st Century. His contributions to Welsh politics were lauded by Ieuan Wyn Jones, former Plaid Cymru leader, and deputy first minister.
National arts and media organizations were represented at the service, paying respects to Lord Elis-Thomas’ work in promoting Welsh culture and language. The former Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan, described him as a provocateur and inclusive leader, recognizing his significant impact on Welsh public life.
