England squad announcement: Marcus Rashford returns as manager Thomas Tuchel names first squad

Thomas Tuchel, the new England manager, has included Marcus Rashford in his first squad. Rashford’s last appearance for the national team was in a friendly match against Brazil in March 2024. Since joining Aston Villa on loan from Manchester United in January, Rashford has been delivering impressive performances. Dan Burn from Newcastle and Myles Lewis-Skelly from Arsenal are set to make their debut for the national team after receiving their first call-up.

England will kick off their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with matches against Albania and Latvia at Wembley on Friday, March 21 and Monday, March 24 respectively. Rashford, who is yet to score for Villa, has provided four assists as he aims to rejuvenate his career. The 27-year-old has earned 60 caps for England, scoring eight goals, but experienced a decline in form while at Manchester United which led to him being left out of previous squads. Despite missing out on Euro 2024 and the 2024-25 Nations League, Rashford is eager to make an impact for his country.

Dan Burn, a consistent performer for Newcastle, is hoping to earn his first cap for England. The versatile 32-year-old can play in the center of defense or at left-back. On the other hand, 18-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly made his competitive debut for Arsenal in September and has quickly become an important player for the team. He has predominantly played at left-back but is also capable of operating in midfield. Alongside Burn and Lewis-Skelly, Burnley’s James Trafford and Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah are also aiming for their first appearances for the national team. Additionally, experienced midfielder Jordan Henderson has been recalled to the squad by Tuchel.

The squad also includes young talents like Tottenham’s Dominic Solanke and Ajax’s Jordan Henderson. Solanke, who recently recovered from an injury, has been selected over Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins. Henderson, 34, made his senior debut for England under Fabio Capello in 2010 and last played against Malta in November 2023. Tuchel’s squad showcases a blend of established players and promising youngsters, highlighting England’s depth in talent
