£21.15The owner of the cargo ship Solong has confirmed that the captain, a Russian national, has been arrested following a collision with a tanker in the North Sea. The 59-year-old man is currently in custody after being apprehended on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter by Humberside Police on Tuesday. The incident occurred when the Portuguese-flagged Solong collided with the US-registered tanker Stena Immaculate off the East Yorkshire coast around 10:00 GMT on Monday.
Sadly, a crew member from the cargo ship is missing and presumed dead after a search and rescue operation was called off late Monday. Authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the causes of the collision and are collaborating with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency on the matter. Fortunately, HM Coastguard reported that 36 individuals were safely rescued and transported to shore following the accident.
