Talbot Green shooting: Four further arrests after Joanne Penney's murder

After a woman was tragically shot dead in a block of flats, police are now probing whether it was a case of mistaken identity. Joanne Penney, 40, was found seriously injured on Green Park in Talbot Green, Rhondda Cynon Taf, and tragically died at the scene on Sunday evening.

Following the incident, a 42-year-old man from Talbot Green was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. Additionally, four more individuals were arrested in the Leicestershire Police force area in connection with the shooting. These individuals had traveled from Leicestershire to south Wales in two vehicles and departed shortly after the incident occurred.

The arrested individuals include a 21-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man from Oadby, Leicestershire, a 68-year-old man from Braunstone Town, Leicestershire, and a 39-year-old woman from Leicester. They are currently in custody and will be questioned by authorities. Crime scenes remain in place as investigators gather evidence to further understand the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Det Ch Supt Ceri Hughes emphasized the ongoing investigation’s rapid pace in determining a motive for Joanne’s killing. The possibility of mistaken identity is being considered as a potential lead. It was revealed that two vehicles from the Leicester area had traveled to south Wales after 10:30 GMT on Sunday and left shortly after the incident. Both vehicles, a beige Nissan Note, and a black Volvo XC40 were seized for forensic examination following the arrests.

Residents in the area expressed shock over the tragic incident, which triggered a large emergency services response. Calum Williams, a nearby resident, recalled hearing the gunshot and described the situation as terrifying, especially with a baby in the vicinity. Another resident, Carolyn Pugh, mentioned hearing a police helicopter hovering, causing concern and unease in the neighborhood that had never experienced such a disturbing event before
