Doctors didn't warn women of 'risky sex' drug urges

Noel Titheradge, who is a correspondent for BBC News Investigations, along with Curtis Lancaster from BBC South Investigations, highlighted an alarming issue. Patients who were prescribed drugs for movement disorders, particularly restless leg syndrome (RLS), shared their experiences of serious side effects. These side effects led them to engage in risky sexual behavior that negatively impacted their lives. The report revealed that the drugs, known as dopamine agonist drugs, had a connection to what was described as “deviant” sexual behavior, including sexual assault on a child, as acknowledged in a report by drugs firm GSK in 2003.

The women interviewed by the BBC shared their stories of being drawn to risky sexual behavior without understanding the cause behind it. They also experienced other compulsive behaviors like gambling and shopping excessively despite having no previous history of such activities. Claire, for instance, developed RLS during her pregnancies and was prescribed the dopamine agonist drug Ropinirole, which initially helped with her RLS symptoms. However, after some time, she began feeling intense sexual urges that she had never experienced before, leading her to engage in risky sexual behavior.

The dopamine agonist drugs mentioned in the report are also used to treat schizophrenia as they mimic the behavior of dopamine in the brain. This “happy hormone” can lead to over-stimulation of pleasurable feelings and under-stimulation of understanding consequences, resulting in impulsive behavior. Research from 2003 highlighted cases where men prescribed these drugs exhibited deviant behaviors, including sexual assault and exhibitionism, due to intensified sex drive caused by the medication.

Further, the article sheds light on the lack of warnings provided to patients regarding these serious side effects of dopamine agonist drugs. Patients expressed their frustration at not being informed about the potential risks associated with the medication, leading to devastating consequences in their lives. They emphasized the need for better communication from healthcare professionals and drug companies regarding these side effects. The impact of these drugs on patients’ lives goes beyond the physical symptoms of their movement disorders, highlighting the importance of comprehensive education and monitoring when prescribing such medications
