A couple in Essex has been fined £1,500 after they discovered a migrant hiding in their motorhome. Adrian and Joanne Fenton found the person zipped inside the cover of a bike rack at their home in Heybridge, Essex, after returning from a trip to France. The Home Office issued the fine to the pair for failing to ensure that no clandestine entrant was concealed in their vehicle, and they are currently in the process of appealing the decision.
Mr. Fenton expressed his disbelief at being fined for taking what he believed was the correct and moral action of reporting the migrant. He raised concerns that the fine imposed by Border Force might discourage others in similar situations from contacting the authorities. The Home Office defended the penalties, stating that they are intended to address negligence rather than criminal behavior.
Speaking on BBC Three Counties Radio, Mrs. Fenton shared details of their journey from France, during which the migrant clung to the bike rack under a cover for the six-hour trip to Essex. Despite the couple’s assertion that they immediately contacted the police upon discovering the stowaway, the Home Office notification stated that the entrant was found during a search conducted by an authorized officer.
